This is my third update of Search Engine Optimization Basics,you can read previous versions of Search Engine Optimization part 1 , and Search Engine Optimization part 2 .

Do not waste your time with Meta Tags

You will find that most search engines do not place a great deal of value on the content contained within Meta Tags today. This is because they have been used too much by spammers. So instead, if you need to, use Meta description elements. Although keywords will not hurt, they don’t really help either, so generally it is not worth the effort to use them. Often there are some search engine sites which will use the content of a Meta description element to describe a site in their search result listings. So whenever possible, make their contents unique and descriptive for every document or page.As stated at the beginning of this chapter, we have provided a few basic
guidelines in relation to SEO. But there is much more that can be done in order to increase your site’s visibility with search engines.

What is the Basic Link Structure within a Site

This is probably the most obvious, but certainly one of the most overlooked aspects of search engine optimization. This helps to make sure that search engine spiders can actually find (crawl) all of your site’s pages. But if they can not find them, then they won’t get spidered, and this means that they won’t get indexed. In fact, no amount of search engine optimization you try will help. Below are some points that should be taken note of in respect of link structure for
your site. Spiders can not see links which are accomplished by JavaScript. This is because, as far as search engines will be concerned, they do not exist. So if you want spiders to follow the links on your site, do not use JavaScript. In fact, you will find that Google will not spider any URL if it looks like it has a session ID in it. So any URL’s that have a longish number or odd characters (such as a question mark) in them should be avoided (these are often dynamic URL’s).

It is important that you make sure that all pages link to at least one other page. Pages which do not link out are known as “dangling links”. It is important that you structure the internal links so that targeted search terms are reinforced. So make sure that you organize your links so that your topic’s sub topic pages are linked to it (ensuring that you use the right link text that is specific to the page being linked to) and vice versa. See below for the different types of methods we mean.

Link Text ( < href="”url”">some link text < /a >

This is one of the 2 most important elements to ensure good rankings for a site. It can either be on pages within the site, or on other sites’ pages. But which ever way you do it, it is important that it is included. It is vital that you include the target page’s main search term in the link text. Also, whenever possible, do not use identical text for every link that links to a page. But if you can include the target page’s main search term in the link text instead. In fact, links will carry more weight with search engines if the text around them is concerned with the target page’s topic and search term(s).

This is probably second most important element in order to get good rankings for a site. It is important that you make sure the page’s search term is contained within this tag. So place it as near to the front as possible while ensuring that the title reads well. In fact, there is nothing wrong with you placing the search term up front on its own and then follow it with a period such
as “Page Rank. Google Page Rank (read more about PR and google in my post)and how do I make the most of it?” As you can see, the target search term here is of course “Page Rank”. But what you should obviously do is make sure that each page’s title tag is different from the title tags on your site’s other pages.

Description Tag

You will find that some search engines , such as Google no longer display the description like they use to. But no matter what, you should include this on each page for those search engines that do. There are even the odd times when Google will actually display them. So it is vital that you write a description that is appealing and incorporates the page’s search term into it at least once
but preferably twice is better. So if you can, place one at the start or as near to
the start of the description as possible.

Keywords Tag

It is important to remember that the keywords tag is never actually treated by search engines as keywords. They will be treated as text on a page. Although this tag is not effective as it used to be, there is no reason to leave it out. Instead, make sure that you put in plenty of relevant keywords and include the search term once at the front of the tag. Also, you do not need to separate keywords or key phrases with commas (as is often done) as search engines ignore these.

H Tag some heading words

The “n” in this tag represents a number from 1 to 6. The biggest heading is represented by 1. You will find that H tags are given more weight than ordinary text in a page, and so the bigger the H size, the more weight it will have. So it is important that you include your target search term in the H tags at least once on the page, but if possible two or three times is even better. Also place your first H Tag as near to the top of the site page as possible.

Bold Text

This gives more weight to a page than ordinary text, but not as much as an H mTag does. So where ever possible, enclose the search term in bold tags occasionally where it appears on the page.

Normal Text

Whenever possible, use the search term as often as you can on the pages of your site. But ensure that they do not detract from how the page actually reads. Ensure that you use the term once or twice in the very early pages of the body text, and then as often as possible throughout. If you need to, reword small parts and add sentences to ensure that the search term is well represented in the text for good search engine optimization.But you will probably find that each word you have in your search term will be found separately on the page. So, if you need to, add a few of them throughout the page.

Alt Text ”some mouseover”>

Include your search term in the alt text of all images on your pages. It is important to remember that some systems, such as those used by Braille readers and speech synthesizers, use the alt text. So it may be advisable to make them usable while including the search term.

So in summary what you need to do is as follows:

1. Select the main search terms you wish to use.
2. Allocate these search terms to a suitable existing page, and if you need
to, split pages.
3. Organize your internal links, and then link text, to suit the target search
terms and their pages.
4. If you can, organize those links from other pages to suit the target search
terms and their pages also.
5. Now organize all the on page elements in order that they suit each
page’s target search term.
6. Finally, now sit back and watch your site’s page rankings begin to

What Is Knol

There's a new kid on the online block named Knol and even this early in the development stage, some people are already predicting that it could bring about yet another significant change to the way we share information on the Internet.
Knol is a new Web service being developed by Google that is meant to serve as a virtual storehouse of knowledge on the Internet. With content being contributed by various experts on different topics, it will behave much in the same way that Wikipedia does currently. In fact many industry experts have made the suggestion that Knol is set to become a direct competitor to Wikipedia and other similar types of web sites.

Google is of course the go to web site as far as search engines go, being the most popular search engine web site today by far. If Knol is as successful in drawing a widespread following as the developers hope, it could bring about the Google's transition from a search engine into a company that creates and publishes Web content.

Some industry observers warn that one problem that could potentially arise is that Google's objectivity in presenting search results could be compromised.

Knol – the name of which is derived from the word "knowledge" – is being developed to allow people to create Web pages on virtually any topic. When completed, it will include several features that will allow its users the ability to perform a number of tasks, such as submitting comments, rating individual web pages and suggesting changes.

We mentioned earlier in this article that Knol has been compared to Wikipediaby many industry analysts. While there are in fact many similarities between the two web services, the main difference is that Wikipedia allows virtually anyone to edit an entry while Knol only allows the author of each particular "knol," – which is what the individual pages in the service will be called – to do so. This means that the same topics could have many different authors with sometimes contrasting – or even competing – points of view.

Google has stated that the main thrust of the Knol project was to focus attention on authors who have sufficient expertise on particular topics. As vice president for engineering at Google Udi Manber wrote in the Google corporate blog recently, the Internet has evolved largely without the benefit of a standardized means to highlight the author's name on each web article. He goes on to say that the company believes that knowing who wrote a particular web article will considerably aid users make better use of the Internet and its various content.

Manber also stated that another important goal of Knol was to cover a wide range of topics, from the various sciences to health concerns to history. Eventually they hope to have Knol become the first stop for research on any topic. Today it is Wikipedia that provides that function and its web pages show up at the top of the results page of Google and many other search engines more often than not.

Some in the industry have suggested that this latest move of Google is driven by the unprecedented growth of web sites that combine knowledge resources such as Wikipedia, and that Google feels the need to have a strong presence in that particular area.

Wikipedia is by no means the only web site that offers that type of service. Many other companies have taken slightly different approaches in functioning as knowledge repositories on various topics on the Internet. These services include Squidoo, Yahoo Answers, About.com and Mahalo.

In spite of the widespread popularity of these services – as well as the existence of many free tools that allow experts and regular people the means by which they can share their knowledge online – Manber said that Google feels that it is still not easy enough for the average user to do those things.
Interestingly, considering all the hype and excitement that is currently surrounding the news of Knol's existence, Google has refrained from discussing the project any further than these initial details, and have even said that it is still an experimental project at this time. This means that just like many other Google tests that never saw the light of day, Knol could end up never even being released publicly at all.

As for Wikipedia, site founder Jimmy Wales has downplayed his site's comparison with Knol, saying that while Wikipedia's goal is utmost objectivity in its content, with each individual article being the sum total of the collective knowledge of its various authors, Knol's model will likely result in highly opinionated and possible even contradictory articles on even the simplest of topics.

Another important distinction is that Wikipedia is a strictly non-profit web site that does not carry any type of advertising, while Knol is a decidedly more commercial venture, with its content authors earning revenue from any Google ads on their site.

Part 2

This is my second update of Search Engine Optimization Basics

Make sure your Page Titles are Descriptive

If you make your page titles as simple, descriptive and relevant as possible, it will make it easier for the search engines to know what each page of your site is about. This will then allow people to scan through the search results they get,and are able to quickly determine if your document contains what they are actually looking for. Also, it should be remembered that the page title is also what is used in order to link to your site from the results provided by the search engines.
As a result of this, it is important to ensure that the title on the page is one of your most important elements of your site. In fact, some people will argue that this the most important part of any site above all other things.

Use of Real Headings

This is where you need to use h1-h6 (header tags) elements for your headings.By using graphics for your headings you are able to use any typeface you want (but search engines will not pay much attention to this). Even if you do use the alt attribute to specify an alternate text for heading images, this is not anywhere near as important as using real text in a heading element.But if you are unable to use real text, then look at the various image or flash replacement techniques that are available instead. However, be aware that there may be some risk involved in doing this. As image replacement involves hiding text, it is quite possible that you may be penalized by search engines for doing this. But at present, this kind of risk seems pretty slim. ;)

Ensure that your URL’s are search engine friendly

It is important to use search engine friendly URL’s, as opposed to dynamically generated ones that have a query string (which lets the server know which data to fetch from a database).Unfortunately, there are many search engine robots which have difficulties with this kind of URL and they may well stop at the question mark, and so not actually look at the query string.By using a search engine friendly URL; you are helping both your ranking and
users of your site. Many sites have seen an incredible improvement just because they have changed the URL scheme on it. However, the modification and rewriting of a site’s URL can be a little tricky,if you use blogspot blog like i do you CANT do rewrite.

Getting Linked

There is no easy or sustainable way in order to solve this but for one. The really only good way to ensure that your site gets linked is to ensure that it contains good content. For any site on the web, incoming links are very important,especially for Search Engine Optimization. In fact, you may find that this is the hardest part of SEO for you to implement.But many people have found that incoming links are less important, especially where you have more specific and unique content on your site.

Make it Accessible to All

This is as important as all things previously mentioned. It is important that you make your site accessible to those who are visually impaired, as this will help search engine robots find their way around it also. It is important to remember that Google is blind, so even if you are not bothered whether blind people use your site or not (which we all should be in today’s world); you still need for it to be accessible. What this means is that you should use real headings, paragraphs and lists, and avoid using anything which may interfere with the search engines spiders.

Be Careful when making a Submission

Although this is often overrated, submitting your site to directories and search engines can actually be useful. This is especially important if the site happens to be new and has not as yet been picked up by Google and many of the other search engines that are around. But if you do want to look at submitting it to some directories, you may want to consider using Yahoo Directory and Open Directory Project and some directories specific to your topic (for example, if you have a blog, try submitting to http://www.blog-search.info). But you will need patience, as it can take several weeks for any submissions to be processed unless you pay for it to be listed.

Do not try to fool the Search Engines

Never use such methods as cloaking, link farms, keyword stuffing, alt text spamming or any other dubious ways. Although they may work for a short time,you not only risk getting your site penalized, but it could actually be banned from search engines altogether.As search engines like their results to be accurate, they just do not take kindly to people trying to trick them.

Avoid the use of Frames

Although it is possible to provide workarounds that will allow a search engine robot to crawl frame based sites, these will still cause problems for any visitors who find that site through a search engine.What happens is that when someone follows a link from a search result to a frame based site, they will end up on an orphaned document. This will, in most cases, create confusion for the user, as in many cases, vital parts of the site will
be lost, such as navigational links.

Browser Detection – Be Careful

If you have to use some kind of browser detection, then make sure that it does not break when a search engine spider or any other unknown agent comes along. Unfortunately, if the spiders can not get in, then your site will not be found......

Part 1

It is time to SEO your site.. i was thinking one day why do i only write on my blog about posts on "how to make money" when a lot of blogger's don't know the basics of SEO,well i will try to explain the best i can on how to optimize your blog for best search engine results through my blog posts.

By many people, SEO is considered to be a part of search engine marketing. It is often used when people are describing a process for improving the amount of traffic that goes to a website from various different search engines.

Many site owners will engage in using SEO Tips in an attempt to obtain qualified visitors to their site. The quality of these visitors will often be measured by what specific keywords they are using in order to reach the desired result they want, such as making a purchase, or it could just viewing or downloading a particular page on that site. It may be that the visitor just requests some further information, or they sign up to a newsletter.

Search Engine Optimization is a marketing strategy which can often generate a good return for the site. But what must be remembered is that search engines are not actually paid for the traffic they send to a site from a natural (organic) search. Plus, they will regularly change the algorithms that they use for these searches to be carried in an effort to improve the results for people using their search engine. In fact, there is no guarantee that using this system is successful in either the long or short term for any website. Because of this, SEO is often compared to traditional forms of PR (Public Relations), while PPC (Pay per Click) advertising is more closely associated with traditional forms of advertising.

However, even if you do find you have increased traffic to your site because of SEO, if your site is unprepared for this increased traffic, it may in fact be detrimental to your site, as visitors will go away feeling dissatisfied and will not return.

But though SEO can be considered as a marketing tactic which is a law unto
itself, it is often considered to part of the bigger picture by many industry experts.

Why Use Search Engine

SEO (Search Engine Optimization), as already previously mentioned, is a sub section of search engine marketing. Unfortunately, with SEO, there are no shortcuts, and if you are looking for a way to get quick and easy results, then this isn’t it. But instead, you will need to carry out some hard work, especially in relation to the actual content of your site. Also, you will need to have plenty of patience, as results do not happen overnight. So if you are looking to improve the search engine position of your site, you should consider this very early on when looking at using SEO.However, what are important are the following points:

-Good Content

This is probably the single most important point you should remember when doing SEO,(beside your blog design and content layout) especially if you want your site to be found on the web. Although your site may be technically perfect so that the search engine robots find it, you will find that it will not help if the actual content of your site is not good. For the content of your site to be good, it should be factually, as well as grammatically correct. (I don't do check spelling) But this is not really necessary for every site that is on the web today. However, what is important is that whatever your site is about, the content actually needs to be unique and specific so that it will appeal to people.

Moreover, it in fact needs to be particularly appealing to those people looking for information or who want to find your site. By having good content on your site, visitors will return and eventually these visitors who return are more likely to link to your site.

Having lots of inbound links is not only great for your site, but for search engine rankings also. It is even better if those links are from more highly ranked sites than your own. Also, not only do you need to have good content on your site, you also need to have fresh content also. If you add new content to your site on a regular basis, you are giving your visitors more reasons for returning to it. Because of this, search engine robots will also visit your site more often as soon as they notice that you are updating it regularly. So what this means is that any new content
you add, will then be indexed much quicker in the future..ergo you will make more money ;)

-Check your Spellings

note:i do not use check spelling for this blog...why?? i dont know maybe i like my english "thinking"

If your site is written in English, then you are probably aware of the differences in spelling between American and British English. Where in the UK they will write“colour”, in the USA it is written as “color”, and the same can be said of“optimization” and “optimization”. So if you can, why not set up your machine so that the spell checker is set up as USA English rather than British English.Unfortunately, there are many words between these two languages that are often misspelled, and in fact, the same can be said for many other languages around the world....

You may have read the original report in 2007, but I think you would be interested to read this new one because there are new strategies, revised 'older methods' that used to work but a year later needed to be changed, Do's and Don'ts, and even a new article series at the end of the report.


So You want to be a Best Blogger around the web community do NOT allow these things to happen on your blog,here is my guide part 1.

5 Step Guide On How To NOT Be A Best Blogger Part-1

1) Taking The Default Template

There are lots of great templates to choose from. Instead of just using the first default option because it’s easy, it helps to find the template that best fits the site or consider creating a new one.

Your visitors will stay a 3 sec on main page if they see a standard blog with a default template,and they will continue to surf elswhere.

2) Flooding A Site With Ads

Ads are an acceptable way of monetizing a blog, but ads can make it difficult to find and read the content. Planning ad placement carefully and sparingly can end up paying dividends.

Some have suggested that monetizing your blog from the onset allows your readers to be accustomed to ads right from the beginning.

By exposing the reader early on, it builds their tolerance for advertising and reduces the likelihood of creating nasty surprises that come in the form of unsightly ads.

Here is the main reason why I think this reasoning is flawed:

  • New visitors arrive at your blog everyday - As more content is developed and optimized, you’ll see more search engine visitors who have never been to your blog before. Visitors will also arrive at your blog through links on other blogs and websites.

All these visitors are ‘untapped’ or not familiarized with the advertising on your blog. As we all know, first impressions are important.

This doesn’t mean however, that you shouldn’t monetize your blog. You should, but optimum results will only be achieved when you’ve built up a large reader base or developed a “strong” daily traffic ratio.

If you have more than 40 readers every day on your blog it is time to setup ads.
Some of the readers will hit the back button if they see ads among your post’s,but if your site is popular experiment one day and try to separate ads on one column in your template.

How To Setup A Website

Unless your blog is a secondary part of an existing website you should always install Wordpress or else on the root directory. When I created my first, first, first, blog I used an automatic Wordpress instalation that my web hosting company offered, but the standard installation was done on “www.domain.com/blog”. lol

I was not sure how this would affect the blog therefore I decided to leave things as they were. A couple of months later when I started studying SEO I realized that this was a bad move. My blog could be accessed either through “www.domain.com” or “www.domain.com/blog”, meaning that the Homepage was duplicated. Secondly Google’s Pagerank was also being divided and some aggregators like Technorati were considering the two addresses as two different blogs…..duplicate content.

If you plan to use your www.domain.com for only one “niche” do NOT install any CMS or else as I do.

4) Rambling incessantly

A blog should be updated regularly, and if new topics are hard to find, then the individual posts may be too long. Generally it’s better to create shorter, more frequent posts. Keep the audience engaged through expanding on topics piece by piece, as dissertations tend to dissuade all but the most avid fans.

Don’t post your daily meals and what you did eat today I don’t care about that.

5) The Need To Feed

Make your feed address a prominent part of your blog, and offer email subscriptions as well for those who haven't discovered RSS.Also, offer full feeds or short (just put ads in it). Blogger community recently discovered that partial feeds were one of the top reasons users unsubscribe. Don't worry that you'll lose a few page views - regular, committed readers are far more important to your blog's money making success.

And if you're still not using a feed reader yourself, you should seriously consider it. It may take a while to get used to it, but your productivity will soar and you'll be able track many more blogs than you ever could with a list of bookmarks.

Digg I visit on a regular basis to vote on stories that I love as well as to find new and interesting information. A few days ago I was reading through the articles that are currently listed on the front page of the Scientific Section, and was observing the rich are getting richer and the smaller bloggers to the difficulty of the cracking upper echelon of Digg success.

Digg The voting system is designed to enable the most popular stories to maximize exposure and to prevent users from gaming the system. But one of the results of this system is that it strongly encourages blogs and websites with huge audiences while small ones are left with a much more difficult chance of winning the exposure of Digg.

If you visit the section of the technology on a regular basis, you probably see many of the same sites and blogs are presented almost daily. These sites regularly publish new content that users appreciate Digg and they built a large audience for a good reason. Some of the ones you see on a regular basis include Ars Technica, Engadget, Gizmodo, TechCrunch, Mashable, Valleywag, Lifehacker, and ReadWriteWeb, among others.

While these sites all provide quality, timely articles. However, I can not help but believe that there are plenty of other worthy stories in the blogosphere. Digg I think most of the users who visit the research section already subscribe to most of these blogs, I know that I do. In this case, could not be more Digg useful resource for users, if we introduced the sources of content they do not already have in their RSS reader?

At that particular time I was on the front page of Technology, 11 of 15 stories came from what I would consider to be major players. Ars Technica were four elements of the page, and Gizmodo and ReadWriteWeb had two each.

I understand that this is not Digg has the responsibility to provide bloggers with the opportunity to reach thousands of new readers. Digg aims to show the most popular stories to its visitors. However, as Digg user, I would like to see more stories on the front page that are new to me and I want to be able to discover new sources of information. There are thousands of blogs out there that offer quality content that interests me, but I can never find most of them.

Many of the biggest blogs mentioned above have such a following that only a very small percentage of readers digg need for a story to get it to the first page. On the other hand, a small blog may need a lot of help to get the votes needed to access the home page. The biggest blogs often only need to include a button Digg somewhere on the job or in the RSS feed to convert a large subscriber base in a high number of diggs, an advantage that smaller is not of blogs .

So what options are only a small blogger to go to the front page? One option is to build a powerful Digg profile, which can take a lot of time and effort. Digg user profiles with a strong (and many friends) have a better chance to send their comments on the front page, but many users Digg disapprove someone submit their own content, except perhaps not a great option. Digg's shout system seems to be largely ineffective, so adding friends and share your story you probably will not get very far either.

I believe that this small leaves bloggers with only a few options, some of which Digg itself does not. The first method that I have used successfully casual is to create more traffic with other social media sites, and we hope it translates diggs. Another option is to e-mail friends and contacts with a request for Digg. This substance is the same as the system Digg shout, except that it may actually work. There are even groups of Digg users who agree to share their communications with each other in order to gain more diggs for everyone. Otherwise, you can communicate with someone who has a high visibility and ask them to send your evidence. The last option, and one that has received a large number of persons banned from Digg, is to buy diggs.

1. Semantic Apps will become popular in 2008, due to their ability to get better content results and make better data connections. Think search engines like Hakia and Powerset, wikipedia-like efforts like Twine and Freebase, and apps that use semantic technologies under the hood (such as AdaptiveBlue and Snap).

2. In tandem with #1, Google will experiment more with Semantic Apps in '08. The Knols project, although not overly semantic, is a hint of this direction.

3. Web Services platforms will be a fierce battleground in '08, with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and others competing to provide 'Web OS' and online storage to consumers. Unfortunately this may spell the end of a number of startups in this space.

4. Zoho and/or ThinkFree will be acquired by big companies wanting to leapfrog into the Web Office space.

5. The online advertising market will consolidate, after the spate of acquisitions in 2007. CPM will continue to dominate for media brands and CPC for niche sites, although there will be experimentation in VRM and other forms of highly specific targeting of ads. Privacy issues will prevent the latter from becoming mainstream though. The much-hyped CPA (Cost per Action) will continue to be a pipe dream, because publishers simply don't want it.

6. The big Internet companies will surprise us all by embracing open standards, and attempting to compete with each other with features instead of data lock-in (OK, this could just be wishful thinking!).

7. The most interesting innovations on the Web in 2008 won't happen in Silicon Valley, but in Asia (China, Japan, Korea). At least one startup from China will break through in the US market with Twitter-like success in 2008 - and it will almost certainly be a Mobile Web app.

Marshall Kirkpatrick, Lead Writer, ReadWriteWeb:

1. Twitter will be acquired.

2. Most ad networks will start producing their own content to advertise against; and some content companies today will get acquired by ad networks.

3. Online video will become so ubiquitous, including live and mobile, that everyone will wonder how the internet existed without it. It won't feel like a big deal, though.

4. A handful of big companies will let you start logging in with an OpenID associated with your account.

5. The value of recommendation engines will become all the more clear; the era of data will be celebrated.

6. People will rebel against Google, at least a little bit. Maybe.

7. People engaged in the new web will do some really awesome stuff that we'll all be in awe of.

Josh Catone, Lead Writer, ReadWriteWeb:

1. Tumblr will be acquired.

2. Privacy will be a growing concern in the mainstream, but ultimately people won't really take any action and for the most part, things won't change. Some companies and groups (think Mozilla) will push for better privacy controls for users, while others (think Facebook) will continue to push the envelope and continue down a slippery slope. Users will eventually push back, but I am hesitant to say that proverbial "straw that breaks the camel's back" will come in 2008.

3. OpenID will be adopted by more startups and larger web companies, but most people (mainstream users) still won't use it - that's a couple of years off.

4. Facebook will continue to grow and their platform will be adopted by other large social networks. Google will sweat.

5. Mobile web usage will be a big story in 2008. It's already big in many parts of the world; and Westerners are about to get hooked. With new mobile devices that makes web surfing less painful, people will be more and more connected away from their computers.

6. Mainstream media coverage will be a catalyst for the adoption of Web Office apps by consumers; and Microsoft will eventually be forced to change their Web Office strategy and offer a fully online office suite (but that latter won't happen in 2008). Offline mode (Gears, AIR, Silverlight, etc.) will be what really tips the scales and causes mainstream users to to embrace the as-of-yet unfamiliar world of Web Office applications.

Alex Iskold, Feature Writer, ReadWriteWeb:

1. 2008 will be slow and cautious, with the first half dominated by recession or fear of recession.

2. Facebook is going to see the same kind of decline in popularity in 2008 that MySpace saw in 2007.

3. Digg is going to be acquired by one of the mainstream media conglomerates.

4. Implicit applications, which monitor our habits and automatically infer our likes, will rise.

1. Facebook will acquire companies that do the following, in order to strengthen their advertising unit: personalization, behavior tracking, image recognition (Riya?)

2. Facebook will release a browser.

3. However, despite all that... Facebook will decline.

4. Google OpenSocial will be a failure; Google will try to create its own social networking empire by making acquisitions in this space.

5. Microsoft will become more aggresive and buy many popular companies at once (remember Ballmer's quote). Candidates include SixApart, Technorati.

Sean Ammirati, Editor, ReadWriteTalk (our podcast show):

1. Google will really start looking vulnerable in 2008. While the 'one trick pony' comment by Steve Ballmer drew sarcastic responses, this will begin to look prophetic. While they'll maintain market share in the search industry, the lack of traction in any other of their other initiatives will start to cause frustration. Plus, they will increasingly be perceived as the 'evil' company in many of these new initiatives.

2. Closely related, Yahoo's Hack strategy (see ReadWriteTalk's podcast with Bradley Horowitz) will start to bear fruit and things will look much more optimistic in Sunnyvale this year.

3. Facebook will start to feel pressure from two trends that will emerge on the web: distributed social networks and distributed commerce systems. For distributed commerce systems, look to see a first proof of concept from the VRM project. Chris Messina's diso project with Wordpress will be a great proof of concept for distributed social neworks.

4. Non-search advertising on the web will increase in value significantly. This will be done through a lot of innovation in the ad targeting systems (both behavioral and contextual) and new metrics being adopted by Madison Ave beyond CPC and CPM.

5. There will be a lot of innovation in the hyper-local space, putting the final nail in the newspaper industry's coffin. This will include companies like Outside.in and Yelp moving toward widespread use and new web properties (from both startups and big Internet Cos) emerging.

6. Finally, a 3G iPhone! OK, I don't know if this is a prediction, but I really really want it to be true :)

Charles Knight, Editor, AltSearchEngines (RWW network blog)

1. In the 1st Q 2008, the true "Google Killer" in search will be in Stealth Mode. In 2nd Q 2008 the first prototype will begin in closed Alpha mode. In 3rd Q 2008 it will be ready for the final closed Beta testing. In 4th Q 2008 it will launch and "Rock and Shock" the world!

2. The classic Vertical Search Engines (Job Search, Health, Consumer Electronics, Shopping, Video, People, more...) will continue their dominance over all other Search Engines in their various niches.

3. The Alternative Search Engines will pick up the pace of partnerships and cooperation, for their solid mutual benefit.

4. Mainstream Media interest in the Alts will increase until it begins to rival coverage of the five major search engines.

5. The trend towards 'widgetization' of the Alts will continue. Approximately 2 in 10 Alternative Search Engines (20%) have widgets now, and that number will double in 2008 to 4 in 10 or 40%.
