Great news, everyone stuck in 2001! Microsoft will allow users to downgrade from Windows 7 to Windows XP! So if you’re super happy with the stability and performance of Windows XP, and don’t give a damn about any of the new features or enhancements included in Microsoft’s latest offering, you can safely bury your head back in the sand!

For businesses, this kind of entitlement makes some sense. I know many enterprise customers are extremely risk averse, and schedule upgrades across their thousands of machines in multi-year projects. Many enterprises are still running Windows XP, with no intention of changing any time soon, so it’s awfully nice of Microsoft to permit these downgrades.

Of course, folks running a Free Software operating system get to bypass this issue altogether. Why should Microsoft dictate what you can and cannot run on the computer you purchase, after all?
